Many people assume that dentures or bridges are the only options for missing teeth – but dental implants are often a better, longer-lasting solution. Whether you’re considering them for yourself, or looking into treatment options on behalf of a loved one, it’s completely natural to have questions. Dental implants are a reliable, long-lasting way to replace missing teeth, but suitability can vary from person to person.

In this guide, we’ll gently talk you through the factors that help determine whether implants could be right for you – from bone and gum health to general wellbeing and lifestyle considerations. We’ll also explore the supportive treatments that may help prepare your mouth for implants if additional care is needed beforehand.

With a thorough assessment, and the support of our experienced team here at Goldsworth Road Dental & Implant Centre in Woking, many patients are often pleasantly surprised by the outcomes that can be achieved.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that replaces the root of a missing tooth. Titanium is used because it is biocompatible, meaning it is accepted by the body and integrates naturally with bone.

During treatment, the implant is carefully placed into the jawbone where the tooth root once sat. Over time, the surrounding bone grows around the implant creating an extremely stable foundation for the final restoration.

Once healing is complete, a custom-made crown is attached via a small connector called an abutment. The result is a replacement tooth that looks, feels, and functions just like a natural one – often so convincingly that even patients forget which tooth is the implant!

Why Dental Implants Are So Effective

When a natural tooth is lost, the jawbone beneath it is no longer stimulated. Over time, this can lead to bone shrinkage, changes in facial structure, and a sunken appearance around the mouth.

Dental implants help prevent this. By stimulating the jawbone in the same way a natural tooth root would, implants encourage the bone to remain strong and healthy. This not only preserves facial shape but also supports long-term oral health – an important benefit that dentures and bridges cannot fully provide.

Who Is Suitable for Dental Implants?

Many people are excellent candidates for dental implants, but suitability depends on several factors.

Bone Health

Adequate bone volume is essential for supporting an implant. Patients who have worn dentures for many years may have experienced bone loss, particularly in the upper jaw. However, this does not automatically rule out implant treatment.

Advanced procedures such as bone grafting or sinus lifts can rebuild lost bone and create a stable foundation, making implants possible even for patients who were previously told they were unsuitable.

Healthy Gums

Gum health is critical. Active gum disease can compromise implant success, but it can often be treated first with hygiene therapy, antibiotics, or periodontal treatment. Once your gums are stable, implants may still be an option.

General Health

Conditions such as diabetes or heart disease do not necessarily exclude you from treatment, but they must be well managed. Your dentist will assess your medical history carefully and may liaise with your GP or consultant if needed.

Oral Hygiene Commitment

Implants require excellent oral hygiene. Daily brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups are essential to prevent infection around the implant and ensure long-term success.

Smoking

Smoking significantly increases the risk of implant failure. Non-smokers have the highest success rates, but patients who are willing to stop smoking before and after treatment may still be suitable.

Age

There is no upper age limit for dental implants. Patients in their seventies, eighties, and even nineties have enjoyed successful outcomes. However, implants are generally not recommended for under-18s, as jawbones may still be developing.

Are Dental Implants Painful?

Implant placement is typically carried out under local anaesthetic and often our clients are surprised by how simple and pain-free the procedure is. Most patients report only mild swelling or tenderness afterwards, which usually settles within a few days and can be managed with standard pain relief.

Dental implants in the UK have an excellent track record, with success rates of around 95% over ten years in healthy patients.
